Sense–Forecast–Adapt: Adaptive and Proactive Resilience

ANCRiSST 2026 brings together the smart structures community to advance the full pipeline—from sensing and experimentation to data-driven modelling, forecasting, and control—with the explicit goal of enabling proactive resilience (anticipating demand escalation and triggering timely interventions). The topical scope follows the long-standing ANCRiSST focus on smart materials/structures, SHM, and structural control, while strengthening the “forecast-first” perspective that is increasingly central to modern monitoring and decision support.

Keywords: smart sensing; wireless SHM; computer vision; system identification; Bayesian inference; digital twins; structural control; smart dampers; 3D printing; guided waves; drone-based inspection; response prediction; proactive resilience.

Core topic areas (indicative, not exclusive)

1) Smart sensing and instrumentation

  • Smart sensing, wireless sensor networks, low-power acquisition, energy harvesting, embedded/edge sensing

2) Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and evaluation

  • Monitoring strategies, damage detection/localization, performance evaluation, field deployment and reliability

3) System identification, data science, and digital twins

  • System identification, data management, data science workflows, model updating, hybrid physics–data twins

4) AI/ML and probabilistic inference for SHM and forecasting

  • Machine learning, Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification, short-horizon response prediction, risk-informed decision logic

5) Computer vision for SHM and “senseable” infrastructure

  • Vision-based displacement/drift tracking, multi-modal fusion (IMU + vision), automated condition assessment

6) Robotics- and drone-enabled inspection workflows

  • Drone-based inspection as part of resilience operations (rapid deployment of monitoring modules; post-event verification)

7) Structural dynamics and structural control

  • Structural dynamics, vibration mitigation, semi-active/active control, smart dampers, control under uncertainty

8) Smart materials, smart structures, and advanced manufacturing

  • Smart materials for sensing/actuation, metamaterials, additive manufacturing/3D printing, topology-optimized components and connections

9) Non-destructive testing (NDT) and guided-wave methods

  • Guided wave testing, vibration-based monitoring, complementary NDT approaches for diagnosis and validation

Special emphasis in 2026: forecasting-driven resilience

A distinctive focus of the 2026 edition is the coupling of forecasting (response prediction with uncertainty) to proactive interventions (reconfiguration and control). Contributions are especially welcome on:

  • “what-if” forecasting to compare candidate interventions,
  • forecast-triggered adaptation policies and control strategies,
  • validation protocols and benchmarking for predictive SHM.
